PvP Battle Gimmicks Guide

Everything on the three Battle-Only Form Pokémon that transform mid-battle — Aegislash, Mimikyu, Morpeko. Trigger conditions, stat shifts, and how to play with and against them.

Aegislash

Steel/Ghost · Released July 2025

Shield Forme ↔ Blade Forme

Aegislash

Starts in the bulky Shield Forme. The moment it uses a Charged Attack, it flips to Blade Forme (offensive) right before damage is calculated, so the Charged Attack lands with high Attack. It reverts to Shield Forme when it uses a Protect Shield or switches out.

  • Shield Forme stats — ATK 97 / DEF 291 / STA 155 (very bulky)
  • Blade Forme stats — ATK 291 / DEF 97 / STA 155 (Attack and Defense exactly mirrored)
  • In Shield Forme its Fast Move becomes a 0-power (1 dmg), 6-energy charging animation
  • No specific move triggers the change — ANY Charged Attack flips it to Blade
How to playThe standard line is to tank in Shield Forme, then nuke with a Blade-Forme Charged Attack. But right after that Charged Attack it sits at Blade Forme (DEF 97), so consecutive hits melt it fast. Facing one, strike right after you bait out its Charged Attack.

Mimikyu

Ghost/Fairy · Released April 2026

Disguise — effectively a third shield

Mimikyu

Starts in its Disguised Form. It fully nullifies the damage of the first Charged Attack it takes (0 damage, once), then changes to Busted Form with a permanent −1 Defense for the rest of the battle. On top of your two shields, that "one more block" effectively acts like a third shield.

  • Only the first Charged Attack is blocked — Fast Move damage still lands
  • After the block it gains a permanent −1 DEF debuff
  • Currently a top Great/Ultra League pick (Fast Move: Shadow Claw)
How to playShield baiting (a cheap Charged move to pull a shield) does NOT work — Disguise eats the first Charged Attack for free. Against Mimikyu, treat it as 2 shields + Disguise = 3 layers to break through, and conserve energy accordingly.

Morpeko

Electric/Dark · Released October 2024

Full Belly Mode ↔ Hangry Mode

Morpeko

Starts in Full Belly Mode and flips between Full Belly and Hangry every time it uses a Charged Attack. Its signature move Aura Wheel changes type with the mode — Electric (Full Belly) vs Dark (Hangry) — letting one Pokémon poke two different weaknesses.

  • Aura Wheel — 100 power, raises the user's Attack by 1 stage (self-buff, no self-debuff)
  • Only Aura Wheel's type changes with the mode — the Pokémon's typing (Electric/Dark) and stats stay the same
  • Mode flips on each Charged Attack
  • Active only in GBL and Team GO Rocket battles; reverts to Full Belly outside battle
How to playEach Aura Wheel stacks an Attack buff and rolls its type between Electric and Dark. The strength is alternating Electric/Dark into the opponent's weakness, but it's a fragile glass cannon — play to survive long enough to stack buffs.
